banksy has the third in his booklet series out. it's called cut it out and is in the same style as existencilism and banging your head against a brick wall . at the sum of £4 you can't go wrong! as you'll know if you follow the blog i am a fan of banksy's work. whilst i realise some people think graffiti is vandalism and irresponsible i think we could do with some more of banksy's attitude especially to the invasion of private space with advertising (my only problem with graffiti and stencilling is more that most of it is crap) i love this quote from the book...
people are taking the piss out of you every day. they butt into your life, take a cheap shot at you and then disappear. they leer at you from tall buildings and make you feel small. they make flippant comments from buses that imply you're not sexy enough and all the fun is happening somewhere else. they are on tv making your girlfriend feel inadequate. they have access to the most sophisticated technology the world has ever seen and they bully you with it. they are the advertisers and they are laughing at you.
you however are forbidden to touch them. trademarks, intellectual property rights, and copyright law mean advertisers can say what they like wherever they like with total impunity.
f**k that. any advert in public space that gives you no choice whether you see it or not is yours. it's yours to take re-arrange and re-use. you can do whetever you like with it. asking for permission is like asking to keep a rock someone just threw at your head.
you owe the companies nothing. less than nothing, you especially don't owe them any courtesy. they owe you. they have rearranged the world to put themselves in front of you. they never asked for your permission, don't start asking for theirs.
Hey Jonny, i just got this yesterday at the ICA! It is indeed another great collection of pictures and thoughts from Banksy. i keep reading that quote about advertisers to everyone i meet who flipantly say he's just a criminal!

I enjoy Banksy.
And I feel the same towards the guff put out at us by the "denominations" and others in churchianity who would monopolize and limit Christ forming in me if they but could do by their programmes and "religious-spirit-speak".
