the latest version of itunes is podcast enabled. podcasting is all the rage on the web at the moment. perhaps the simplest way to describe it is that podcasting is to radio what blogging is to journalism. people are recording their own shows/thoughts/rants and uploading them as mp3s for anyone to download. as with blogs there is plenty of crap out there but there are also gems to be unearthed. and you can download to your mp3 player and listen on the go...
where this leaps up a gear is that podcasts have a feed which if you subscribe to in an appropriate bit of software that program will check the podcast and download the most recent broadcast. this is precisely what itunes does. so for example i really like mark kermode's film reviews on simon mayo's bbc five live on friday afternoon but i only ever listen to it if i happen to be driving somewhere. i have now discovered it is one of the bbc's trials as a podcast. so in itunes all i needed to do was to copy the xml/rss feed from the bbc page, click on the advanced drop down menu in itunes, select subscribe to podcast and it downloads the latest show. in the podcasting section i can then select whether i want itunes to check my feeds for updates daily or whatever or manually.
i have recorded some interviews in india and have been thinking about starting a podcast but my current thinking is that i might do that with some others at cms - we're still talking about it. jordon cooper of course is leading the way (though he has been pretty unwell since starting which is why i suspect there is only one post so far). if you are recording audio and uploading mp3s read up and find out how to turn that into a podcast with its own feed. with the new feature in itunes it's just got a whole lot bigger...

i have added a new blog category on podcasts in anticipation that there will be lots to talk about and discover in the heady world of podcasting in the coming months and have started a list of links to podcasts that i will add to (in sidebar on left hand side below links)... i am a novice so feel free to send me any podcasts you know of that are worth subscribing to.
I'm very excited by podcasting. apart from the convenience for me in receiving transmissions, my hope is it will create narrowcasting spaces for more voices in same way that podcasting has. some folks have great ideas, but lack the skills to put them into written form.
also, I'm in dialogue with a number of improvising musicians who are very keen on podcasting as a way to share improvs and jams.
we are probably not far away from making video-casting a reality, and that really will breed a new era of guerilla journalism.

Thought you might want to know about some serious podcasting. Emerge http://emerge.typepad.com and Generations http://emerge.typepad.com/generations has lots of podcasts. Really cool stuff. There are also Podcasts at Coffee For One off the same page. There is many hours of listening pleasure.

Start a podcast. I did. But a warning, it's not so easy to keep doing one.

I've been working on show #9 for about a month. Hopefully that'll be out tonight.

We have a podcast from our audio sermons website, this uploads a sermon a week. I am going to mention how we do it on my blog shortly. But, once in iTunes it seems the best way to advertise it is to find it on the podcast directory, then right-click on the podcast icon and copy the URL. So, for us if you want to listen simply follow this link http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=73330772
