creation stations

back in 2005 (i think) we worked with group publishing to create a resource that gave people the tools to set up an interactive installation/worship experience based on the story of creation with a station for each day. we ran the installation at grace and at greenbelt - some photos are here. it was a very neat condensed kind of experience narrated by a series of meditations with accompanying ambient soundscape listened to on headphones and was pretty all age friendly. it was published with group under the title worshipping the creator. anyway it's run its course with group and the rights have returned to us at proost. our name for it was always creation stations so we have made it our latest upload on proost as a download resource under that title. it's a bit large with all the bits and pieces so we have separated it out into two parts: creation stations - the leader's guide, poster files, childrens guide and other bits and pieces; and creation stations meditations which is the audio soundtrack. the good news is that because it's now a download it's much cheaper.

lent is actually a season we have often run installation type experiences, often in holy week. i'll say a bit more over the next week or two about other resources and ideas for lent.. if you already subscribe you can access this in the downloads area. if not you know if makes sense...

changing the rules of the game

stephen fry gives the most optimistic view of the ipad. i hope he's right. the planet is certainly a better place with apple on it! what i like is the idea of things that change the rules of the game which certainly the iphone did. equally iplayer has changed the rules of the game for watching television and listening to radio (along with tvcatchup). or the new digital cameras such as the 5dmkii has changed the rules of the game in movie making . what will change the rules of the game in christianity i wonder?

12 steps

digital storytelling

last night i went to a presentation given by daniel meadows on digital storytelling. it was organised by london independent photography. having been a photographer in the documentary vein for many years daniel is a great enthusiast for the current shift in technologies putting tools into peoples own hands to create their own stories. his largest project in this area is capture wales where a team travelled round wales running workshops where people brought along old photos and worked them into stories that were broadcast each night. scroll down the digital storytelling section of his site to follow a few stories. they are very simple but delightful. it was an excellent evening. i was full of cold and very nearly didn't go but was glad i did. he describes digital storytelling as...

Short, personal and written with feeling there's a strictness to their construction: 250 words, a dozen or so pictures, and two minutes is about the right length. Considered narratives which subject themselves to strictures of form tend to elegance. Digital Stories -- when properly done -- can be tight as sonnets: multimedia sonnets from the people.

this kind of storytelling could have many uses in community, church, mission communities and so on...

starting a blog could not be easier - posterous

i took a training session on IT for cms last week. one of the questions that came up was about blogging and what the easiest free interface was. the answer is posterous.com . rather than repeat myself this is the post i wrote having set up a blog by simply sending an e-mail

Last week I took a training session for people in mission and one of the questions that came up was how to start a blog. I did the usual thing of mentioning various providers and in particular I showed www.tumblr.com as I think it has a very easy interface to get started with. However since then I have been doing a bit of scouting around and the solution that is the simplest and most remarkable seems to be posterous.com . With this you simply send an e-mail to [email protected] and a blog is created for you. The address is sent back to you and then you can send posts via e-mail, with audio, photos, movies, pdfs, even powerpoints attached that will be converted to a reasonable format and posted to your blog. What could be simpler especially for people not wanting to engage in the techy side of things or for people in parts of the world where internet access is limited? Wonderful...

There's more of course - add your profile pic, give it a different look and so on. But rather than bedazzle anyone with that I have just left it exactly as it gets set up, other than adding a profile photo and blurb in my profile which is what appears under the photo

yes you read that right - just e-mail and attach anything you like and it will be on your blog. you can also select to link it to facebook, twitter and all that at the click of a mouse so your posts scatter across your networks. and you can group blog. so for example, i am considering switching the ealing lip blog to posterous as it could not be simpler for people to post. you register them and they simply send to an e-mail you give. you can also link to an existing blog so whatever you e-mail to posterous will then appear on your existing blog. i'm not thinking of switching personally or anything and am used to the typepad interface and like it but this is more of a useful tool for any of you encouraging others to blog and trying to find a simple way to get them started... well last sunday there was a failed experiment by ikon called binary - chiming in for maths geeks everywhere with a digital boradcast live of a worship experience at 10:00 on 01 10. the web site never got going on the day but the whole thing is now up online (i think) - movies, audio, reflections. there seems to be a blip wanting you to register between pages 0101 and 0110 - well if you want to make the leap without registering 0110 is here

for some reason on a moonlit night in devon i felt compelled to go down the beach. it was freezing cold, quiet, hauntingly beautiful and i was completely alone on this vast gorgeous beach. two things were inevitable - whispered gratitude for this amazing planet and a few photos...

generate magazine - an artifact of emergence

tim snyder who i met in 08 in austin is staying at the moment, visiting a few communities and coming to resource this weekend. along with paul soupiset and makeesha fisher (and a bundle of others no doubt) they have pulled off creating a new magazine - generate. this may be old news but i have only just seen a copy so forgive me... it's full colour all the way through. the design is brilliant, it's a great size and it's printed on the most eco friendly paper you can get. it has a mix of culture, arts, articles, reviews, even a bit of liturgy and poetry thrown in. there are very few celebrities - it holds up artists and communities and small voices. i really like it - congrats to the team who have pulled it off who produce it totally as volunteers. it's mainly funded through advertising and then of course subscriptions. in these times doing a magazine is foolish! it's expensive, you have to post it to people, will they buy?- but against the odds foolishness has paid off. i think initially there will be a couple of issues a year. you can see sample pages here at the brilliant issu.com

so we were talking about this in the pub - tim, steve, adam and i - and reflecting how magazines have a different edge to books. they often connect with movements. they are cheaper. they are somehow more transient, catching a moment. they can hold a range of perspectives together even opposing opinions, you can dip in and out, you can like some pieces or writers and ignore others, they can hang around on the kitchen table for anyone to pick up. that's not to say that books aren't good. i'm a big fan too - but the genre is different.

i think generate captures the spirit of the emergent conversation as well as anything i have seen come out of the US in recent years. it has a different tone. there's lots of speculation about the movement out there in the blogosphere at the moment - is it dead, is it maturing, is it just beginning?... but this is evidence that there's plenty of energy and good and creative people around honestly working out what it means to follow christ in these times.

the strapline for the magazine or at least this month's is an artifact of the emergence conversation. this led us to an interesting discussion on the difference between artifact and artefact - turns out they both are alternative spellings of something made or given shape by humans. but steve pointed out that artifact is also a term for a glitch in digital media such as a jpg image. this is a wonderful unintentional double meaning in the strapline - see this article for examples of design accidents as sources of inspiration. now there's a feature for a future issue!

resource is definitely going ahead this weekend...

if any of you booked in to Resource are wondering, the Resource weekend is definitely going ahead. the snow in london is nothing to get excited about - an inch or two. the forecast today and saturday is sunny (still cold of course). sunday depending on where you are may bring more snow - it says it's light in london. i hope people will be able to stay for moot in the evening on sunday, but if you're worried about the weather when we see the forecast on sunday either stay another night or head back a bit early. looking forward to it...
