Desert. This year has been barren, fatal, often times dark and cold; but through the death, certainly is birth: through the stripping away, there is a core revealed.
Next year, I wouldn't mind if the summation in a word were also Desert, though I suspect I wouldn't also mind if there were a bit more oases as well.
