a monster calls is a wonderful film - do go and see it. it's very emotional and in some reviews people think this is a bit overdone which may be true - i certainly cried the most i have in any film for some time though i didn't stop to think whether it was overdone! it's the story of connor o malley, a boy whose mum faces illness, and a monster who comes to him or whom he calls. the monster tells him three stories and requests a fourth that the boy must tell to speak his truth. all of the stories are dreamlike and mythical weaving their truth between fantasy and reality like all good fairy tales. it's powerful storytelling and definitely in the same sort of territory as where the wild things are. i loved the sequences where the film film flipped to the stories. the boy's acting is incredible. there were some absolutely brilliant quotes in the film. i loved this one on stories. i'll be reading the book it was based on... mark kermode discusses it here in his usual brilliant and insightful way.
Stories are wild creatures, the monster said. When you let them loose, who knows what havoc they might wreak?
