here is a video of the talk i gave along with susann (a colleague who speaks german which is handy!) at the [email protected] konferenz in hannover. it's a reflection on the pioneer gift around the metaphor of true north - with a series of themes i have noticed seem to be at the heart of what we have developed at cms around pioneering mission, and also a few thoughts on what might help the gift to flourish. i was bening translated simultaneously. susann's reflections on the other hand are in german!
everything si smith produces i have loved so i was very excited to get how to disappear completely through the post this week. this is a comic for lent based in leeds. it's beautifully illustrated and follows one story that seemed to me to be a contemporary take on christ's journey into the wilderness. it's kind of a mini graphic novel but i guess that's what a comic is? you definitely don't need to be based in or know leeds to appreciate it.
in case you don't know si's work he has a load of things on proost including the lovely 40. i think proost are likely to try and add this comic as a download at some point hopefully but to be honest it is best experienced in print and is only £5. go get yourself a copy...
do you know someone you think of as a good person? i've been thinking about "good" quite a lot lately and appreciating people who are just good to be around, good in communities, good in neighbourhoods, good as friends, and do good most places they go. i want to be that kind of person. it feels like we need to recover good, being good, doing good, working for good - not in some sort of holier than though way but in a way that is motivated by love of the world and people in it. it can have a bad rap - with labels like 'do gooders' but i think in my mind at the moment i am thinking - bring on the do gooders, let's have more goodness. i don't know where this thought will lead yet but over lent this year that's what i am thinking about probably. i have been reading proverbs which (depending on the translation) says some stuff about good people such as:
