Thanks for this reflection. I'm going to see if I can get hold of a copy from a library. My PhD thesis was on friendship as a way of fostering the participation of physically disabled people in Baptist churches. I've read Steve Summer's book and agree with you that the idea of the church as a community of friends of Jesus is a powerful one. Regarding friendship as a church leader - it is a complex balancing act! It might well be an approach that reduces the risk of the abuses of power we've heard so much about in recent years.
