shrigley walker from jonny baker on Vimeo.
ron arad's curtain call at the roundhouse is totally brilliant! it is a huge curtain made of translucent elastic/plastic tubes that form a huge circle inside which movies are projected onto in the round. a bundle of artists have been commissioned and together make up two hours of material that plays through. the challenge for the artists i assume is how to make the most of the context - a huge round screen. greyhounds racing round, a huge circular piano keyboard, wonderful immersive animations and patterns are some of the ideas on display. my favourite and seemingly quite a few other peoples is david shrigley's walker who simply walks round, pauses and sighs i took a little movie on jen's camera which you can see above.
and you donate what you can. the roundhouse us one of my favourite venues in london and this seems a perfect way to celebrate five years since it's relaunch. it works perfectly in the space. the evening we were there there was also a performance of experimental music and projections and various things are going on like that. you must go and see it if you have the chance - it's on ujntil 29 august i think. belgos is over the road so a couple of belgian ales with joel made for a perfect night out in this wonderful city london...
a plus was that there didn't seem to be any embargo on taking photographs which made a refreshing change. the screen of course is the envy of alt worship groups everywhere - what could be a better environment for worship?!

harry has been doing poetry at various spoken word events round london over the last year. at one of the evenings run by tea fuelled art the monies raised on the door go to a creative project. not sure exactly how it came about, but they put money from one night into making a video with harry of one of his poem's - 59. it's quite brilliant (if you'll forgive the proud dad perspective...).

go and see pina - it's extraordinary [and you have to see it in 3D]! forget everything else you are doing and prioritise going. i can't say it any stronger... i guess it shouldn't come as a suprise from wim wenders (paris texas, wings of desire, buena vista social club, million dollar hotel, his photography...) but it is honestly unlike anything else. and while you are at it he has a photography exhibition - places strange and quiet - at haunch of venison in london which i must get to at some point in the next few weeks.
this is a short clip from the movie i found on vimeo

we put a couple of new movies up on proost this month - cave and calavary. cave is a movie exploring the notion of cave as a place to retreat to to be alone with god. It was inspired by ian adams book cave refectory road. the other is called calvary and much more geared for the other end of lent and good friday. it's a photographic piece exploring stations of the cross.

yesterday rich played this movie at a cms pioneer training day. it's a foo fighters track - can't say i'm that familiar with their music. anyway people liked it so much he has put it up on youtube. he made the whole thing in keynote - i had a look and on one slide there were around 79 transitions! and to get it to sync with the song he simply did the transitions manually. he then used snapz pro to record the presentation as a movie. i hadn't come across this before but it looks like a very powerful little tool to record anything on screen or on an area of your screen. genius!
so it's the first worship trick for a while - no 99 in series 3.

greenbelt have just mailed out their latest newsletter and in it is a link to greenbelt tv youtube channel which includes a bundle of video short talks (around 8 mins) from people speaking at the festival. one is me talking about worship. the way these were put together was that a booth was set up and the media team contacted people on site on the day to come and give a talk. i was asked and foolishly said yes and even more foolishly had no time to think about what to say until i stepped up. fortunately what was at the time embarrassingly stop start and incoherent has been edited into something at least vaguely coherent. apologies to anyone in the audience in that particular session! - but go watch the likes of dave andrews on the beattitudes, mark vernon on friendship or clare short on palestine and many more...

your kingdom from jonny baker on Vimeo.
grace last was a wonderful mix of stations for our christmas nine. just to recap 9 artists/groups took a reading from the traditional nine lessons christmas service and created an installation in response. they had to a) choose a piece of music to play and b) use a 2m square frame. for mine i laid the frame flat and filled it with soil and wrote the words your kingdom come with candles in response to the prophecy in isaiah 9:2, 6-7 - the people walking in darkness have seen a great light. above the frame i had a screen projecting the video unwrap our darkness that i made last advent. the tune i played was robert plant's satan your kingdom must come down. lots of people were taking photos of the various stations which will follow at some point but here's a movie i took...

it's the first of december - wow! i am so not ready for that... here's our proost news for advent which has links to advent and christmas resources
Ten Thousand Places is this month's proost release. It's a delightful collection of poems from Chris Goan spanning themes of humanity, faith, wilderness, community, mission and family. Chris is part of the community Aoradh in Dunoon, Scotland. It's available as a pdf download or as a physical book.
Today is the beginning of advent. Just a quick reminder of some of the resources on proost for this season...
9 lessons is flash animation . Run the flash file (in a browser or flash player) and there are 9 animating loops corresponding to each of the nine lessons and carols from the traditional Christmas service. But here's the brilliant part - each one loops for as long as you like while you do the reading and whatever else. Then you simply click on the play button in the corner to move on to the next image.
nine - nine artists interpret the traditional nine readings with 6 movies and 3 songs.
25 - Si Smith's amazing cutout and make nativity characters and advent calendar and comic.
wait - Vaux's simple but powerful movie and liturgy on waiting in advent.
silent night - a movie that's ideal for pretty much any Christmas service
If you are a subscriber the movie Unwrap our Darkness (inspired by Cheryl Lawrie's Christmas confession in Hold This Space which has some lovely advent prayers in) is a free bonus movie in the downloads section.
Then of course lots of liturgies and songs on the advent theme elsewhere in the books and audio sections...
If you subscribe of course you can access the content in the downloads area as part of your subscription. if not you can buy the individual items or subscribe now...
Have a great season of Advent!

the premiere of the insatiable moon was a wonderful evening. the film is based on the novel of the same name by mike riddell which follows the story of arthur, a man who has mental health issues. he thinks he is the second son of god and is part of a community of men with mental health issues who unite around a care in the community home. some members of the community are trying to close the home down to clean up the neighbourhood and others fight for its survival. the charm of the tale is that arthur does seem to mediate something of the presence of god. there are some very powerful scenes. difficult issues are tackled but with a warmth underlying the film and a love of the humanity of the guys.
i guess every film is a long journey only i don't normally know about it. but because i know pip and mike i've followed the journey of this film on and off over 8 years or so. i remember pip saying he wanted to work with mike to turn this into a film way back! that journey has involved fund raising, script writing, recruiting, working out how to continue when a big funder dropped out and so on. in the end the whole thing was made for under a million dollars - i have no idea how exactly. so to see it being played around cinemas in new zealand and now opened in the west end was wonderful. it is actually going to be in cinemas in the uk in january/february so look out for it. you must go and see it. rawiri paratene plays arthur. he was the grandfather in whale rider which was an amazing film. he read the novel and as a result tracked mike down as he wanted to see it as a film and play arthur!
