i have finally got round to listening to emerg::podcast put together by red herring. each programme lasts 30 minutes and a large part of each is an interview interspersed with some music tracks (some courtesy of proost). it's good, well worth a listen. it's actually quite a good intro to the whole emerging church thing... one of the things i like is that red herring seems committed to making it global - i hope he manges to sustain that emphasis.
cms youth team monthly podcast trax16 goes live today
the cms youth team are plotting a youth podcast. they are looking for input, ideas and so on. and there are ipod nanos to be won so tell any teenagers you know...
following the popularity of mark berry's desert meditation, he has started a podcast of his meditations. no 2 is dreams. due to the complications of copyright and music mark has created his own chilled track to go with it and it's excellent - a man of many talents! along with the outlines of what mark does at their midweek contemplative space it's a great resource.
the podcast is also a way mark hopes to generate a bit of support for his ministry so once he adds a donate button go and give him some support...
i have added the feed to his podcast into my list in the sidebar. (note to self: update the worship trick with his meditation so it includes the podcast feed)...
i feel like i've hardly got my head around podcasting but seems like video podcasting is also going to be all the rage (though requires good bandwidth)...

audiomission is the new cms podcast. the easiest way to follow a podcast is to paste this feed into itunes or the equivalent
In this very first edition of Audiomission you’ll hear a special extended report from BBC Songs of Praise presenter Pam Rhodes as she discovers how CMS has been involved in the relief effort since the Asian tsunami struck. Anita Matthews, CMS’s national children’s work adviser, will bring you a faith reflection on the tsunami, and you’ll hear the latest CMS news headlines from Trevor Smith.
later in the year there will also be a youth podcast
if you like your music experimental, ambient, post rock (yes apparently it is a genre) then subscribe to the kranky records podcast. october's was a taste of their fall/autumn releases. december's is a dip into the archives. i came across kranky records because of the amazing dead texan album. i've added the kranky podcast feed to my list of podcasts. makes me think that maybe we should do an occasional proost podcast?...
if you've not listened to a podcast before the easiest way is to subscribe in itunes. simply go to the advanced menu and click subscribe to podcast and type the feed address in.
centering from the center is a weekly podcast from joanthan normon with weekly 10 minute meditation/prayer... nice idea
typepad have added very easy podcast support... cool
stephen said has been recording a series of interviews and podcasting them. i have subscribed to his feed and pasted it into itunes. as part of his podcast he has posted the first of regular discussions with hirschy. this picks up on a conversation that was sparked when forge put out a statement reacting to emergent's reaction to don carson. (i haven't blogged about that discussion because to be honest i thought it was dull and utterly pointless - carson hadn't done his homework - why give it the space? i've got better things to do. i also thought that the reactions were very defensive - not a stance i'm that keen on either.) emergent then reacted to forge and so on and so on... alan and stephen are discussing that reaction and trying to clarify what they were saying. the reason i have decided to mention this is because i think maybe some conversation about the different emphases is a good thing now. i think that different expressions of emerging church within different countries and contexts are a good thing. part of the forge gift and challenge to us in the uk is and has been to be more missional and i thank them for that. we see god more fully when we see god's image more fully reflected by engaging with all the parts of his body round the world. in that sense we all need each other...
the comments on the interview post with alan are an intersting conversation as well...
why is it that when churches discover a new technology they still think along the lines of the media they used in the old world?...
i am fed up with hearing people get excited about podcasting and then in the next sentence say that their church are thinking about podcasting sermons. why?! it reminds me of several of marshall macluhan's insights/probes:
our typical response to disrupting new technology is to recreate the old environment instead of heeding the new opportunities of the new environment.
official culture still strives to force the new media to do the work of the old media. but the horseless carriage did not do the work of the horse: it abolished the horse and did what the horse could never do.
the potential of any new technology is always dissipated by its users involvement in its predecessors.
i am interested to know what other interesting/creative ideas people have for podcasting than preaching...
the latest version of itunes is podcast enabled. podcasting is all the rage on the web at the moment. perhaps the simplest way to describe it is that podcasting is to radio what blogging is to journalism. people are recording their own shows/thoughts/rants and uploading them as mp3s for anyone to download. as with blogs there is plenty of crap out there but there are also gems to be unearthed. and you can download to your mp3 player and listen on the go...
where this leaps up a gear is that podcasts have a feed which if you subscribe to in an appropriate bit of software that program will check the podcast and download the most recent broadcast. this is precisely what itunes does. so for example i really like mark kermode's film reviews on simon mayo's bbc five live on friday afternoon but i only ever listen to it if i happen to be driving somewhere. i have now discovered it is one of the bbc's trials as a podcast. so in itunes all i needed to do was to copy the xml/rss feed from the bbc page, click on the advanced drop down menu in itunes, select subscribe to podcast and it downloads the latest show. in the podcasting section i can then select whether i want itunes to check my feeds for updates daily or whatever or manually.
i have recorded some interviews in india and have been thinking about starting a podcast but my current thinking is that i might do that with some others at cms - we're still talking about it. jordon cooper of course is leading the way (though he has been pretty unwell since starting which is why i suspect there is only one post so far). if you are recording audio and uploading mp3s read up and find out how to turn that into a podcast with its own feed. with the new feature in itunes it's just got a whole lot bigger...
